Rob Wilson

As a twin growing up in Knutsford, Cheshire, Rob learned to forge his own identity through art from an early age. He taught himself to draw by sketching trees and ever since then Rob has been constantly learning and soaking up influences that fuel his imagination.

At Bradford University he studied Graphic Design and Illustration. The city’s rich textile heritage still resonates in his work today, with vintage sewing patterns and stitching often weaving intricate layers of texture, detail and colour together. His eye for graphic design can also be felt in his distinctive mixed-media paintings.

Ten years after his degree show of four small life studies mainly in stitching, Rob came to wider attention when he was commended by the Derbyshire Open art competition for a study of crowds emerging from Buxton Opera House. However it’s his first painting of a Manchester landmark, The Cornerhouse, that brought all of his progressive techniques together for the first time.

A number of awards, including Best Artist at Buxton Festival Fringe and the Buxton Spa Prize, saw demand for his abstract cityscapes and moody landscapes grow. As well as the architecture of Manchester, Rob’s depictions of London and other bustling cities, including Shanghai, New York, Amsterdam and Venice, can be found in homes across the world.

In addition to private commissions, he’s produced work for Lancashire County Cricket Club, Manchester United Football Club, Transport for London, Westminster Abbey and the National Trust.

Rob has recently enjoyed competing in Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year competition as a wildcard artist. He is currently experimenting with oil paints and portraiture, as well as developing his Art Kit product to guide others through completing an art project at home.

Rob lives with his family in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, and works from his studio by the canal in Marple Bridge. With the Peak District on his doorstep, his vivid paintings of the natural world reflect his contemporary and unique touch.
